Online Teaching & Learning

The Two Oceans Graduate Institute opted for the development and implementation of a distance and online teaching mode of delivery. This mode of teaching and learning is realized in environments where there is effective integration of different modes of delivery, models of teaching and styles of learning through adoption of a strategic and systematic approach to the use of ICT’s and digital technologies. The underpinning principle of an online teaching pedagogy lies in the shift from lecturer-centered teaching to student-centered learning in higher education. This student-centered approach is based on a deepened understanding of the student’s learning.

In an online and distance mode of delivery, the teaching and learning method supports students in creating their own structure of knowledge of the discipline under study. A learner management system (LMS) has been specially designed for the Two Oceans Graduate Institute and can be accessed via the institution’s online web-based intranet. The LMS supports several online teaching, learning and assessment strategies as well as different ways of online interaction between the student and the lecturer/module facilitator as well as between students. These include assignments, chat, choice, database, feedback, forum, glossary, lesson, quiz, SCORM, survey, wiki and workshop. There is virtual contact via ZOOM, Skype or WhatsApp.

Module Content for Subject Specialisation Requirements:

The Two Oceans Graduate Institute offer a combined Senior Phase and Further Education and Training programme appropriate for teaching in secondary schools. The knowledge mix for this phase combination must support at least two teaching specialisations, namely one Senior Phase subject and one Further Education and Training subject. Thus, the method subject allocation when applying will be one in Senior Phase and one in FET Phase. Subject Specialisation requirements are as follows:

Senior Phase Method Subject

The dates are scheduled into each semester based on the academic programme at TOGI, school terms and other arrangements with schools. It usually takes place early in the second and third term.

Students visit different schools and different grades in the Intermediate Phase each year. It is only in exceptional circumstances, and with permission from the Teaching Practice Unit, that the same school can be visited more than once. Students are encouraged to visit different types of schools, e.g. city, rural, well-resourced, poorly-resourced, skills, Montessori and private. This is to familiarize students with a range of contexts and learning experiences.  Students can contact the Teaching Practice office (tp.bedip@togi.ac.za) to get guidelines for selecting appropriate, functional schools.

Students must include these requirements into the planning of their studies.  They might need to make arrangements to get leave from work, care for children or other dependents, or other external factors that might influence their participation in Teaching Practice.

    | PGCE Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching Teaching Practice

Work Integrated Learning is addressed by two Teaching Practice courses. These courses form an important part of the PGCE (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training) curriculum. In order for students to gain exposure to the latest methodologies we do not consider Teaching Practice to be an area whereby we can recognise prior learning.

In the Teaching Practice course (TP 1 and TP 2), students are required to spend five consecutive weeks at a brick-and-mortar Secondary (High) School.  The dates for this five-week period will be determined by Two Oceans Graduate Institute and must take precedence over any work commitments.  Students who are teaching their method subjects in a Secondary School will be granted the opportunity to do this teaching practice at the schools where they are already employed.  Students who are working overseas will be expected to find their own suitable placement for this Teaching Practice where they will be expected to teach children of High School age their method subjects.

Teaching Practice is where theory and practice come together to allow all students to show competence in the classroom environment.

    Full Time

The curriculum design of the PGCE (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching) provides for a full time study of one academic year spread over two semesters (clusters). Prospective PGCE students may enroll for the programme in January or in July of each year. Students will register for the five compulsory modules and their teaching specialisation subjects (one Senior Phase subject and one Further Education and Training subject) as well as two Teaching Practice modules spread over the two semesters respectively. The compulsory modules will be focusing on the foundations of education and  ICT for teaching in the senior and further education and training phases (information communication technology; digital educational and instructional technologies). Students who want to enhance their basic ICT or communication skills may register for specific elective modules included in the curriculum.

    Part Time

Two Oceans Graduate Institute has a flexible approach and provides for PGCE students to enroll for part time study as well.

Prospective students may also enroll for the twenty-four months part time option spread over 4 clusters. This option will allow students to take less subjects per cluster spread over the 24 months period with the condition that students first complete educational and foundational subjects successfully before registering for teaching subject specialisations and school based teaching practice.
