Overview
The Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training (FET) Teaching is a fully accredited qualification designed to prepare aspiring teachers to educate learners in Grades 7 to 12. The programme is approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), ensuring that it meets the highest national academic and professional standards.
This 500-credit degree begins at NQF Level 5 and progresses to an exit level at NQF Level 7. It provides graduates with the professional competence and confidence to teach in both public and private schools across South Africa, while also offering a clear pathway to postgraduate study for those who wish to further their academic and professional careers.
The programme is structured to deliver professionally qualified teachers for the Senior and Further Education and Training phases. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training (FET) Teaching programme may choose from the following specialisation streams:
• Languages.
• Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
• Commerce (Economic and Management Sciences [EMS]).
Students develop focused knowledge and skills in their chosen subject specialisations, supported by a strong foundation of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), technological integration, and practical experience. Graduates will be able to demonstrate academic depth, professional responsibility, and the ability to teach effectively in diverse social, economic, and cultural contexts within South Africa and beyond.
To ensure accessibility and flexibility, the qualification is offered in both full-time (minimum of 4 years to complete) and part-time (minimum of 6 years to complete) study modes, making it possible for students to balance their studies with work, family, or other commitments.

Method Subject Combination
Students have the option to select two Senior Phase subjects and one Further Education and Training subject, OR One Senior Phase subject and two Further Education and Training subjects.
Students have the option considering the following streams:
- Languages
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
- Commerce: Economic and Management Science (EMS)
Course Duration
- Full-time: Minimum completion period of 4 years.
- Part-time: Minimum completion period of 6 years.
Admission Requirements
The minimum entry requirements for the study of the degree are:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with an endorsement for entry into Bachelor Studies with appropriate subject combinations and levels of achievement.
- An NQF Level 4 National Certificate (Vocational) with an endorsement for entry into Bachelor studies and with appropriate subject combinations and levels of achievement. The following minimum requirements applies: Home Language: 70% or above; First Additional Language: 70% or above; and our Vocational Subjects: 60% or above.
- Students who completed the NCS in 2008 or after that, but have not obtained endorsements, will be considered conditionally for alternative admission after the age of 23 on the provision of a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) portfolio;
- Teachers who have a recognised certificate or diploma in education or another relevant field may present their qualifications for possible consideration of admission towards RPL and the transfer of credits;
- A Senior Certificate issued before 2008 with a pass in English at the higher grade with a D symbol or at the standard grade with a C symbol, with appropriate subject combinations and levels of achievement
- The teaching specialization subjects chosen by each student for teaching in the Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Phase must have been taken and passed in the National Senior Certificate or equivalent examination or admission process, at least 50% (Level 4). In the case of Mathematical Literacy, the pass requirement is 60% (Level 5).
