PGCE Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching
Teaching Qualification for Those Who Aspire to Shape the Minds of Tomorrow
Overview
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching is a specialised, professional qualification designed for graduates seeking to enter the teaching profession at the Senior Phase (Grades 7–9) and Further Education and Training (Grades 10–12) levels.
This programme comprises 130 credits and is structured at NQF Level 7, ensuring alignment with national academic and professional standards. It equips students with essential pedagogical knowledge, subject expertise, and practical teaching experience, preparing them for a rewarding career in education.
This qualification provides a structured pathway into the teaching profession, enabling graduates to make a meaningful impact in public and private schools across South Africa.
To ensure appropriate curriculum depth and pedagogical competence, students are required to select two teaching specialisation subjects. These specialisation subjects are year-long modules, each carrying 24 credits, and form a critical component of the PGCE programme. The combination must reflect a coherent teaching plan that aligns with the national curriculum requirements for secondary school educators. When applying, students must indicate:
- One Senior Phase (SP) specialisation subject
- One Further Education and Training (FET) specialisation subject.
Students must ensure their undergraduate qualification includes sufficient academic background in the selected subjects. The selection of subject combinations is subject to approval, and may be limited based on prior studies and module availability.
To make this pathway more accessible, the programme is offered in both full-time (minimum of 1 year to complete) and part-time (minimum of 2 years to complete) study options.
