Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching

Teaching Qualification for Those Who Aspire to Shape the Minds of Tomorrow

Overview

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Foundation Phase Teaching is a fully accredited and recognised qualification that prepares aspiring teachers to guide and inspire young learners from Grades R to 3. Approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), this programme meets the highest national academic and professional standards.

In South Africa, the need for qualified Foundation Phase teachers has never been greater. Research and government reports consistently highlight that early childhood education is the single most important factor in ensuring future academic success. Yet, there is a national shortage of trained Foundation Phase teachers, especially in rural and under-resourced communities. By enrolling in this programme, students are stepping into a profession that is both highly sought-after and deeply impactful, playing a vital role in strengthening the education system and shaping the country’s future.

The degree carries 502 credits, beginning at NQF Level 5 and culminating at NQF Level 7. This structured progression equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to deliver quality teaching and learning. Graduates will be fully qualified to teach in both public and private schools across South Africa, while also being eligible to pursue postgraduate studies in education, should they wish to advance their academic and professional careers.

To make this pathway more accessible, the programme is offered in both full-time (minimum of 4 years to complete) and part-time (minimum of 6 years to complete) study options. This ensures that whether students are entering directly after school or balancing studies alongside work and family responsibilities, they have the opportunity to qualify as a teacher and make a difference where it matters most.
